More people than ever before are enjoying cannabis. As a result, a lot of Americans are getting high. Weed is relaxing, energizing, and euphoric, and benefits many people.
If you’ve never tried cannabis, you might wonder what happens when you get high and if there are different types of weed highs.
Stages Of Being High
Everyone experiences cannabis differently, but most users go through similar stages.
One stage of the cannabis experience happens before you get high. Anticipation!
Anticipation – The Pre-Stage
The first stage of being high could be the anticipation of getting sticky buds in your pipe. Call it a pre-stage if you will, but this ritual is part of getting high for millions of experienced cannabis enthusiasts. They understand what happens when you get high, and are ready to roll with it!
Experienced cannabis users prepare their area before they get high. They put remote controls where they can find them and check the batteries. They get their games or hobbies ready. They make sure they don’t have to hunt for anything when they’re high.
Aside from pre-stage anticipation, your body will go through several other phases when you consume cannabis. Some claim there are seven stages to being high, and others say there are ten or more. As you experience different types of weed highs, you will find some stages of being high will be stronger than others, or completely different.
Stage 1
Your first hit. Trichomes broil, and terpenes give up their essence. Pungent smoke rolls over your tongue, down your throat, and into your lungs.
The taste you experience at this point is the essence of the weed. It is the truest flavor you will experience, and probably the best taste you will get out of the weed. It can be an intense experience, and it vanishes almost instantly.
Stage 2
A sense of relaxation and calm marks the arrival of the second stage of being high. You may experience curious sensations, like tingling or becoming unusually aware of a limb. You may feel an uplifting sensation in your head. These feelings differ and are the first signs of THC exposure.
Stage 3
Deeper relaxation and heightened awareness are part of what happens when you get high, and these sensations increase as you consume more cannabis. Colors pop, and shapes appear more distinct. Sound takes on unique qualities. These feelings signal the third stage of being high.
It’s important to note that different strains of cannabis may promote different feelings and types of weed highs. For example, some strains may motivate and energize you, making you feel like you should be doing something instead of just sitting there relaxing.
Stage 4
You may begin to feel lightheaded or heavy. Your head or face may suddenly feel warm. Your body is enjoying a full load of THC and doesn’t know what to do with it yet.
This “rush” is one of the stages of being high, and it won’t last long. It’s like taking an elevator to an upper floor. When the elevator suddenly stops, you feel it in the pit of your stomach, and your body adjusts.
You may experience time alteration in this stage. A few seconds may seem like several minutes, or a few minutes might pass in what feels like an instant.
Stage 5
Your feelings become more stable as your body adjusts to the THC. You reach your peak. You are high.
Knowing how much cannabis to use takes experience. The goal for most cannabis users is to reach this comfortable peak and maintain it.
This is the stage when secondary effects will get more noticeable. What secondary effects happen when you get high depends on the strain you consume. If the strain is famous for motivating creativity, get ready for ideas. If it’s known for its pain-killing abilities, get ready to relax.
This is the longest and usually most enjoyable stage of being high. Depending on the product and your tolerance to THC, it may last five minutes or more than an hour.
Cannabis highs are rarely boring. If it feels monotonous, try a different strain. There are many different types of weed highs and peaks to explore.
Stage 6
After some time, the energy and euphoria will begin to subside. Aches and pains will become more noticeable. There’s an easy cure for that. More weed!
Repeated cannabis use tends to make all the stages of being high less intense and shorter as you build up a tolerance to THC. You can combat THC tolerance by smoking different strains or performing a THC detox program.
Stage 7
Assuming you avoid repeat exposure, the effects of THC will pass in as little as an hour or two with mild weed. It may take a little longer if you’ve smoked more potent bud or have had prolonged exposure.
At this stage, the psychoactive and secondary benefits of your cannabis consumption have worn off. This is not so much a stage of being high as it is a post-stage. You could call it the Munchies Stage.
You know you’ve reached this stage when your appetite increases and everything tastes good.
The munchies are hard to avoid, and some strains are worse than others. It’s part of what happens when you get high with cannabis. Be ready for the munchies and have healthy snacks ready.
The Aftermath
There’s no typical crash or debilitating aftermath stage from using weed like there is from alcohol. Telltale traces may linger in your body, however.
When you get high, your body metabolizes THC and creates certain organic compounds. What it feels like to be high on cannabis can very based on a number of factors. Different types of weed highs will leave different concentrations of these compounds, or metabolites, in your urine. These compounds are harmless, but it may take a few days or weeks to excrete them all.
Also, some stages of being high can give you the munchies, so watch out for unwanted weight gain. Keep healthy snacks ready, or develop some other coping mechanism.
